Robert Adams is a part-time Clinical Lecturer in Dental Implantology at the Cardiff University School of Dentistry. In 2000 Robert undertook the MSc in Implant Dentistry at the Eastman Hospital.
Robert’s work is limited to dental implantology and specialist oral surgery procedures in multi-specialist practices. He is particularly interested in hard / soft tissue augmentation procedures for peri-implant aesthetics and grafting procedures. Robert is an Astra Tech PEERS member and a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantology. He has lectured Nationally on the surgical aspects of dental implant treatment. Further details
Dr Adrian Binney

Specialist in Periodontology

Adrian Binney is a part-time clinical lecturer at the Cardiff University School of Dentistry. He teaches on the Masters Degree course in Dental Implantology, and the Postgraduate Dental Implant Stepwise Course and Masters Degree Programme. He has also lectured on restorative dentistry at Bristol Dental School.
Adrian has completed dental implantology training in the UK, Europe and the USA. He undertakes a wide range of implant and bone regeneration work. His clinical practice, at The Parade Specialist Dental Centre in Cardiff, offers all aspects of restorative and aesthetic dentistry, and advanced periodontics.
Professor David Thomas

Specialist in Oral Surgery

David Thomas is Professor of Oral Surgery and Programme Director of Implantology at Cardiff University, where he established the Implantology & Tissue Engineering MSc programmes. His main clinical interest is in implantology, specifically the use of soft and hard tissue grafting in the management of complex cases.
David is the elected President of the Association of British Academic Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Regional Faculty Advisor and SAC member in Oral Surgery and a visiting Professor in Trondheim Norway. His research group works in the development of novel nano-medicines to treat chronic infection and inflammation.
Professor Thomas took his PhD at Bristol University, where he was the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Fellow.

Now in its eleventh year, the course enables delegates to explore and analyse existing and developing theories and concepts underpinning the field of implantology. The course facilitates professional and personal growth through a wide range of educational and direct clinical experiences. Training takes place in a high quality, interdisciplinary environment offering excellent clinical and academic facilities.
Course Summary
This is a modular programme run on a part-time basis over up to three years. Modules include research methodologies, cellular and molecular biology, restorative dentistry, implantology and periodontology. The programme consists of seminars, lectures and practical teaching. It provides hands-on training in the surgical and restorative aspects of implantology under direct supervision.
Patients are provided for the live surgery and restorative training. Delegates place and restore implants on a one-to-one basis.
Educational outcome
The course equips delegates with knowledge and expertise in the science and practice of implantology. The programme covers theoretical science, through restorative treatment-planning to clinical practice in the direct management of patients requiring fixed and removable implant-retained prostheses.
Diploma in Implantology with the option of further study towards MSc.

WIMAT (The Welsh Institute for Minimal Access Therapy) was opened in 1994 in Cardiff Medicentre, on the shared site of the University Hospital of Wales and the University of Wales College of Medicine. WIMAT is now under the auspices of Cardiff University and runs multi-disciplinary training courses across a range of surgical and medical specialties.
