Scottish Implant Year Course Integrating Implants into your Practice Friday, 31 August 2012 to Friday, 7 June 2013 | Ten days over nine months

The Scottish Implant Year Course is aimed at general dental practitioners who wish to learn the skills necessary to successfully place and restore implants in their practice. 2012-2013 is the fifth year of this unique course.  It has received unanimous acclaim from participants who have completed the programme. The presenters guide general dental practitioners through each stage of implant care, from diagnosis and treatment planning through to fitting and maintaining a restored implant. Providing a detailed scientific, evidence-based approach, each participant treats one of their own cases from planning, through placement to fitting the final restoration.

Course Summary

Half of the course comprises lecture-based presentations, the remainder being hands-on and practical skills. In addition to treating their own patients, delegates are able to observe each others’ cases. Delegates may also bring their nurses/staff on the module focused on instrumentation and aseptic surgical technique.

Educational outcome

Participants acquire the core knowledge and skills to enable them to progress onto further implant qualifications, such as the Diploma in Implant Dentistry (RCS Ed).

"... a good balance of theoretical information and practical exercises, culminating in the placement and restoration of implants on one of our own patients... a terrific starting point for those with an interest in placing and/or restoring implants."
Dr Colin Gardner, Botanics Dental Care, Glasgow

“I found the course of great practical value and a good way to learn the basics of dental implantology.  There were lots of hands-on sessions and a very 'joined-up' approach.  I've since been able to place implants for my patients back in my own practice.”
Dr Abdul Haleem, Complete Dentistry, Paisley

"I really enjoyed the course, which has a good balance of lectures and hands-on training.  The opportunity to practice on pigs’ heads was particularly good.  The content was comprehensive and I now feel competent, with some mentoring, to start treating patients straight away.

In the year prior to attending the course I referred about £100K of implant business, of which about 75 percent were single tooth cases.  I will now be able to treat these patients myself, generating about £50K for my practice.  My patients will benefit from better support and continuity of care."
Dr Nigel Fitter, Kingsmills Dental Practice, Inverness
